     El Salvador is a country of extraordinary contrasts that resonate between its natural wonders of volcanic mountain peaks and more than 200 miles of black sand beaches. Imagine dining al fresco on the mountainside of Cerro Verde more than 6,000 feet high while viewing the grandeur of an adjacent volcano shrouded in mysterious cloud formations. If white water rafting down rivers, trekking through primeval rainforests, jungle safaris through backcountry rivers, or just relaxing on the beach after a day of surfing is your cup of tea, then El Salvador just may bring out the adventurer in you.
     Neatly tucked away on the Pacific Ocean coast on the land bridge that connects North America and South America, El Salvador is the smallest of the Central American countries. Affectionately called el pulgarcito de America, or the little finger of America, it is only about 8,400 square miles in area, or approximately the size of the state of Massachusetts.
     With an infrastructure of highways and car rental agencies, the interior of the country is easy to get around and a must see. Along the northern stretches of El Salvador the Sierra Madre mountains rise over 9,000 feet above sea level. And throughout the country, there are 25 different volcanoes that are responsible for much of El Salvador's geological monuments and nature's beautiful handiwork.
     Traveling through the countryside you'll visit centuries-old colonial cities with fascinating neo-classical churches and quaint villages built along the slopes of mountain lakes. One such place is Lake Coatepeque. Vertical cliffs with dense forests of mountain pines and hardwoods surround the volcanic crater lake.
The cool mountain air creates a perfect climate year round. El Salvador enjoys two seasons, rainy and dry. The rainy season begins in early May and runs through October while the dry season continues from November through April. The mountains are a bit cooler while the Pacific coast towns enjoy a more tropical temperature averaging a high of 80° F. and a low of 64°F.
     Tourism is making a quick and successful comeback. You'll find the capital city of San Salvador a fast-paced modern city with five star hotels, exquisite restaurants, romantic cafes, and an abundance of nightlife.
