Escuela Americana is an independent, nonsectarian, college-preparatory school of over 1600 students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. EA is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Salvadoran Ministry of Education. The mission of Escuela Americana is to provide a top quality, American style, college-prep education, and to provide models and leadership in education to both El Salvador and the region. The school is divided into three divisions: Lower School (4 year olds to 5th grade), Middle School (6th to 8th grade) and Upper School (9th to 12th grade). EA also features a learning differences program and learning support services. The large, approximately 50-acre, campus is exceptional, as are the facilities and support systems. Founded in 1946, the Escuela Americana has a long history of excellence in education and is the largest and most well established school of its kind in Central America.

Class sizes typically do not exceed 25 in the Lower School, while the Middle and Upper School average class size is 16.  The overall school student-teacher ratio is 14-1. Lower School classes below third grade all have teacher aides in the classroom, and other grades through the Middle School have teacher aides available. The Escuela Americana offers a large and varied social service program with students of all divisions performing community service throughout each school year. The Escuela Americana was recognized by Habitat for Humanity in 2002 by receiving not only its award for greatest school participation in all of Latin America but as well its award for greatest school participation worldwide.

Our school year typically runs from the second week of August to early June. New international teachers normally must arrive two weeks prior to the start of the school year, but no earlier than July 25th. Besides various three-day weekends, we typically enjoy a four-day weekend for Thanksgiving, two and a half weeks at Christmas, and a week for Spring Break.

The salary range for international teachers is very competitive for this region, ranging from $19,652 (net $16,850) to $27,835 (net $22,976). Benefits include annual home airfare, excellent international health insurance, furnished housing on campus, free Spanish classes, and partial to full payment of an on-campus M.Ed. program through Framingham State College (Massachusetts). Expenses here for international teachers are limited. The amount an individual can save will vary based upon debt-load and lifestyle. In general, food costs here are equivalent to the US, gas prices are a little higher, but housing costs are limited to a nominal monthly fee plus whatever phone usage or cable services are used.

All Escuela Americana international teachers live on campus in a beautiful and secure housing complex, centered by a lovely pool. Classrooms are about a ten-minute walk across campus. On-campus residences range from one- and two-bedroom apartments to two and three bedroom houses. Electricity, water, sewage, trash, lawn service, and local telephone service are all provided for a nominal monthly fee.

The faculty of the Escuela Americana is diverse, with teachers representing ten different countries. Some 45% of the school’s teachers hold master’s degrees.
