Advanced Placement Program

Pre-AP Preparing every Student for College

Starting in middle school, EA students are provided “AP Readiness Skills” as part of the regular curriculum. Therefore, all students entering upper school are better prepared for the challenge of Advanced Placement (AP) Courses, which are open to students starting in 9th grade. Pre-AP is based on the following two important premises:

1. The expectation that all students can perform well at rigorous academic levels.
2. The belief that we can prepare every student for higher intellectual engagement by starting the development of skills and acquisition of knowledge as early as possible.

Advanced Placement® courses are college-level courses offered in upper school.  This rigorous curriculum provides students with an opportunity to experience the level of expectations they will encounter once enrolled in a university. At the end of the course, students will take a comprehensive exam which measures their mastery of college-level work.  Scoring well on the AP Exam can provide college credit, potentially saving thousands of dollars in college tuition and fees.
At EA, we are committed to each student’s success. We believe that access to rigorous coursework such as the AP Advantage plays a key role in that success.

The AP Advantage at Escuela Americana
Advanced Placement® courses are college-level courses offered in upper school. They can give students a taste of what college is like and can help them stand out on their college applications. In addition to this, scoring well on the AP Exam can get students college credit, placement out of introductory courses or both, potentially saving thousands of dollars in tuition and fees.
At EA, we are committed to each student’s success. We believe that access to rigorous coursework like the AP Advantage plays a key role in that success.

Students take AP Exams at the end of the course, measuring their mastery of college-level work.
Enrollment in an Advanced Placement course is by teacher recommendation and departmental invitation. All students who elect to take an Advanced Placement course are required to take the AP Exam in May.

What are the Benefits of the AP Advantage?
The AP Advantage program offers students numerous benefits for their academic growth. Some of the benefits include:

  • AP courses are interesting and rewarding academic experiences.
  • AP students get to explore topics in depth in their areas of interest.
  • AP courses help students build critical thinking skills, confidence, and the essential time management and study skills needed for college success.
  • AP courses are valued in the college admission process: according to research, 85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions.
  • Research shows that students who score a 3 or higher on an AP Exam typically earn higher grade point averages in college and have higher graduation rates than their non-AP peers.
  • Getting credits before entering college.

What happens when students earn College Credits through AP Courses?
Their options and opportunities expand:

  • Potentially save thousands of dollars in tuition and fees.

Why Should I take AP’s?
Every year, more students are accepting the AP Advantage at EA:

  • During the 2015-2016 school year, 215 students in the upper school enrolled in 1 or more AP Courses, taking a total of 377 AP Exams in 23 AP Subjects.
  • 86% of students who took AP Exams scored 3 or higher (with 5 being the highest grade).
