Science Middle School

The Middle School Science Department has developed a program with high expectations in the areas of Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science. The Middle School Science program corresponds to the National Science Education Standards (NSES) and the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) guidelines.

The main strands for developing the MS Science program include:
  • Science as inquiry
  • Physical science
  • Life science
  • Earth and space science
  • Science and technology
  • Personal and social perspectives
  • History and nature of science
Sixth Grade Earth Science course builds on the concepts and skills acquired in kindergarten through fifth Grade. However, this is the first year students take a year-long science course intended to increase their awareness of the nature and composition of Earth and its surrounding space. This course will focus on major branches of science such as geology, astronomy, meteorology and oceanography. Environmental issues will be discussed as events unfold during the school year. This course will also introduce students to the scientific method as a way to think critically and objectively and will help them develop laboratory skills useful in future science courses.

Seventh Grade Life Science course starts with a basic review of the scientific method and basic science process skills like observation, measurement, collecting data, and communicating results. The program then focuses primarily on three complementary points of view: the unity of life, the diversity of life, and the interrelatedness of life. Students will study ways in which cells obtain energy, reproduce, and pass on traits; characteristics of viruses, bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals; the main features of the human body organ systems; and the principles of ecology. Hands-on activities will be done throughout the school year in order to motivate students to work and to explore the environments around them. Students will also be engaged in labs and investigations that will make learning fun. As much as possible, students will learn techniques that will help them organize and connect different ideas. Respect for life will be emphasized.

Eighth Grade Physical Science course students will develop a foundation on the basic concepts and principles of Physics and Chemistry. Students will conduct field and lab investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical-thinking and scientific problem solving. The course integrates the disciplines of Physics and Chemistry in the following topics: motion, forces, waves, energy, properties of matter, changes in matter, atomic structure and the periodic table, chemical bonding, and chemical reactions. This course will provide students with the essentials in basic Physics and Chemistry needed for a successful scientific transition into the upper level.
